During Peter’s AMA #69 he described a set of questions, or framework, for how to think about supplements one might take.
First, let’s look at it in diagram form:

Now let’s look at the framework in text form:
- Deficiency vs. Enhancement: Are you correcting a deficiency or seeking supranormal levels?
- Goal: Are you targeting lifespan, healthspan, or both?
- Mechanism of Benefit:
If lifespan: Is it disease-specific or broadly protective?
If healthspan: Which domain – physical performance, cognitive performance, or emotional health?
- Trackable Biomarker: Can you measure whether you’re in the therapeutic window?
- Mechanism of Action: Do you understand how it works? (Not required, but helpful)
- Risk-Benefit Analysis: Consider side effects, effect magnitude, data confidence, and supplement quality (the last point is critical – quality issues in supplements are far more prevalent than in pharmaceuticals).

Above is a useful framework for thinking about any supplements we might take.
