Peter Attia’s Supplement Framework – Questions to ask before adding supplements

This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by Peter Attia. Content is based on his publicly available statements.

During Peter’s AMA #69 he described a set of questions, or framework, for how to think about supplements one might take.

First, let’s look at it in diagram form:

Now let’s look at the framework in text form:

  1. Deficiency vs. Enhancement: Are you correcting a deficiency or seeking supranormal levels?
  2. Goal: Are you targeting lifespan, healthspan, or both?
  3. Mechanism of Benefit:

If lifespan: Is it disease-specific or broadly protective?
If healthspan: Which domain – physical performance, cognitive performance, or emotional health?

  1. Trackable Biomarker: Can you measure whether you’re in the therapeutic window?
  2. Mechanism of Action: Do you understand how it works? (Not required, but helpful)
  3. Risk-Benefit Analysis: Consider side effects, effect magnitude, data confidence, and supplement quality (the last point is critical – quality issues in supplements are far more prevalent than in pharmaceuticals).

Roundup

Above is a useful framework for thinking about any supplements we might take.
